Putting Together a Recruiting Video?

There are many ways to produce a recruiting video. Some things to keep in mind:

– College coaches are very busy and get a ton of videos (links) to look at. The easier you make it on the them, the better the chances they will watch it. The main goal of the video is to get looked at by college coaches!
– College programs have specific needs to fill, by position, by year. You may be a great Outside Hitter, but they may not need an OH in 2024.
– For most things, simple is better than complex.

Things I Look For, In This Order:

– A quick graphic (bio) with name, position, grad year and height. I doesn’t have to be fancy, just the basics. If you possess an eye-popping piece of information, such as 7 kills per game or 10 digs per game or an approach touch of 10′ 3″, etc., be sure to include it on this graphic.
– A skills section, shot in the practice gym. If you’re an Outside Hitter, show 10 hits, 10 passes, 10 digs, 10 serves. They need to be back to back (editing ok) and a good, if not great, representation of what you are capable of doing. Most often, a coach makes his/her decision on these initial images. (See #1 and #2 above)
– Edited game skills. Doesn’t have to be a lot.
– One game, unedited.

Things To Avoid:

– Music. It gets muted anyway.
– Fancy graphics.
– Slow motion.
– Highlights, arrows, circles, shadows, etc. on every play.

As a parent, these things are cool and really make it about your daughter, but to college coaches, they are completely unnecessary and, many times, very annoying.

And all of this can be done without the need to pay for an expensive video production!

Then, create a YouTube channel, post the video, and send emails to coaches with the link. Over time, you can edit your skills video, if necessary, as well as add game videos to your channel.
